London gazette 3. Sobakawa Cloud Pillow . I don’t have insomnia or night terrors, and I don’t wake up during sleep paralysis seeing shadow people or anything awful like that; I just don’t sleep as long as I feel like I should. We made this pillow cover from a pretty madras kantha we found in our collection of vintage textiles. It's been patched from years of use, and has a beautiful, shiny.I probably get about seven hours of sleep on average per night, sometimes a bit more, often a bit less, which I’m sure many people would be more than happy with, and I’m not trying to be unappreciative of that. It’s just that if I have the time to sleep in an hour or two longer and feel more awake and energetic, I feel I should be able to, but obviously my body and brain feel differently. As soon as I’m up, I’m up for good. One night while laying around in bed, I saw an infomercial for something called the Sobakawa Cloud Pillow. It was advertised as being “filled with over 1. Well, needless to say I was impressed, and thought perhaps my sleeping woes might have a resolution. I decided to go for it. After ponying up $4. I was forced to browse other items for sale by sister companies or something, in what was literally four pages with URLs like this: https: //www. Upsells. Upsell. 3. Even so, I couldn’t wait to try sleeping on it. The site said it would arrive in 4 – 6 weeks, which was depressing, but reasonable, I thought with a grimace. Once HBO launched its five-part miniseries Mildred Pierce, I knew it was important to bring attention to the original 1945 movie of the same name. It was three days after Christmas. A few weeks had passed, and I couldn’t help but notice I was getting an increasing amount of calls from the phone number 7. I thought nothing of it at first, as I live in Tampa, and 7. St. Eventually though I got sick of multiple calls per day and the one time I did answer, there was no one on the line. I was starting to think I had a dead relative trying to contact me or something. I decided to call them back and find out wtf was going on. A woman answered, informing me that she was from the “Sobakawa Cloud Pillow Verification Department”, mispronouncing the word Sobakawa like she’d never encountered it in her life. What had happened is that the company I bought the Cloud Pillow from had sold my contact information to a company who tries to automatically enlist you in a savings program. After looking it up online, I found stories about this happening frequently. Even more egregious was the fact that they had stalled the shipping process so they could send me this BS savings program literature with the package. The woman asked me if she had my correct address, then asked me again to verify it, probably to be able to legally send me said literature. When I finally was able to get a word in I asked the second lady if I could cancel the program right now and she gave me this little speech that sort of deflected the question to keep you enrolled in the program (“Yes sir, but we want you to know that it’s savings on stuff you do every day anyway and we want you to keep the $4. If you are still unhappy with the program you can call the toll free number printed on the document you receive, blah blah blah”). So after receiving that answer about five times, I said “I want to cancel this savings program right now.” The lady on the line answered promptly with a snippy “That’s fine, sir, we won’t be sending you anything. Enjoy your pillow.”So that was fun. This was early February when the call took place. On February 9th, I called to find out when the pillow would be here. They told me that it was back- ordered and that I would get it around February 2. At this point it had already been two full months, two weeks longer than shipping for the product was supposed to take. A few weeks later, I got a letter in the mail saying that it would ship on March 2nd. On March 1. 1th, after checking the shipping status frequently since the 2nd, the pillow was in Orlando, which is about an hour away from me. This should’ve made me happy, but the pillow was still scheduled to arrive on the 1. Four days for an hour drive. Luckily, the pillow arrived on Friday the 1. I didn’t have to wait the whole weekend. Whew. A Cautionary tale with some good lessons. But I have yet to tell you if it worked or not. It took me a long time to figure out what I thought of the Sobakawa Cloud Pillow. I put off writing this review for months so I could give it as fair of a chance as possible to wow me, but it simply hasn’t. In the infomercial they stress that the pillow stays cool with good air flow no matter how long you lay on it, and they prove this by laying the pillow over a fan, and putting scraps of paper on top of the pillow, which all subsequently get blown all over the place. I have not found this to be true. In fact, this pillow easily gets as hot as any other pillow I’ve used. And the 1. 0 million air beads don’t cushion your head as much as crunch up together and get kinda hard or spread out just a bit too much. This is just personal preference, but I like to sleep with my head relatively propped up, and this pillow does not facilitate that at all. I constantly have at least one other pillow under it to get it to the right height. Not to mention somehow it messes up my hair more than any other pillow if I sleep sideways. And no, it has not helped me sleep in any significant way that I can tell. All that aside, it’s not a bad pillow. I just paid way too much and had to wait way too long for it. Bought a Sobakawa Cloud Pillow, they sold my contact info to people who kept calling me, took three months to arrive, only slightly better than a normal pillow.

Within two weeks, by Technorati. She had long been a horror- movie icon, a symbol of Hollywood. Certainly she received much more attention in death than she did in the final years of her life. With no children, no religious group, and no immediate social circle of any kind, she had begun, as an elderly woman, to look elsewhere for companionship. Savage later told Los Angeles magazine that she had searched Vickers. In the months before her grotesque death, Vickers had made calls not to friends or family but to distant fans who had found her through fan conventions and Internet sites. We live in an accelerating contradiction: the more connected we become, the lonelier we are. We were promised a global village; instead we inhabit the drab cul- de- sacs and endless freeways of a vast suburb of information. In his recent book about the trend toward living alone, Eric Klinenberg, a sociologist at NYU, writes: . But before we begin the fantasies of happily eccentric singledom, of divorc. And loneliness makes us miserable. Solitude can be lovely. Crowded parties can be agony. We also know, thanks to a growing body of research on the topic, that loneliness is not a matter of external conditions; it is a psychological state. A 2. 00. 5 analysis of data from a longitudinal study of Dutch twins showed that the tendency toward loneliness has roughly the same genetic component as other psychological problems such as neuroticism or anxiety. The best tool yet developed for measuring the condition is the UCLA Loneliness Scale, a series of 2. A 2. 01. 0 AARP survey found that 3. According to a major study by a leading scholar of the subject, roughly 2. Americans. Across the Western world, physicians and nurses have begun to speak openly of an epidemic of loneliness. Almost every factor that one might assume affects loneliness does so only some of the time, and only under certain circumstances. People who are married are less lonely than single people, one journal article suggests, but only if their spouses are confidants. A belief in God might help, or it might not, as a 1. Loneliness may not have killed Yvette Vickers, but it has been linked to a greater probability of having the kind of heart condition that did kill her. With money, you flee the cramped city to a house in the suburbs or, if you can afford it, a Mc. Mansion in the exurbs, inevitably spending more time in your car. Loneliness is at the American core, a by- product of a long- standing national appetite for independence: The Pilgrims who left Europe willingly abandoned the bonds and strictures of a society that could not accept their right to be different. They did not seek out loneliness, but they accepted it as the price of their autonomy. The cowboys who set off to explore a seemingly endless frontier likewise traded away personal ties in favor of pride and self- respect. The ultimate American icon is the astronaut: Who is more heroic, or more alone? The price of self- determination and self- reliance has often been loneliness. But Americans have always been willing to pay that price. The great American poem is Whitman. American culture, high and low, is about self- expression and personal authenticity. Franklin Delano Roosevelt called individualism . The drive for isolation has always been in tension with the impulse to cluster in communities that cling and suffocate. The Pilgrims, while fomenting spiritual rebellion, also enforced ferocious cohesion. The Salem witch trials, in hindsight, read like attempts to impose solidarity. The history of the United States is like the famous parable of the porcupines in the cold, from Schopenhauer. In his 2. 00. 0 book Bowling Alone, Robert D. The trends he observed continued through the prosperity of the aughts, and have only become more pronounced with time: the rate of union membership declined in 2. Masons and the Elks continued their slide into irrelevance. We are lonely because we want to be lonely. We have made ourselves lonely. Well before Facebook, digital technology was enabling our tendency for isolation, to an unprecedented degree. Back in the 1. 99. Critics of the study pointed out that the two groups that participated in the study. Which brings us to a more fundamental question: Does the Internet make people lonely, or are lonely people more attracted to the Internet? A recent study out of Australia (where close to half the population is active on Facebook), titled . Facebook users had slightly lower levels of . It may be that Facebook encourages more contact with people outside of our household, at the expense of our family relationships. The researchers also found that lonely people are inclined to spend more time on Facebook: . Moira Burke, until recently a graduate student at the Human- Computer Institute at Carnegie Mellon, used to run a longitudinal study of 1,2. Facebook users. That study, which is ongoing, is one of the first to step outside the realm of self- selected college students and examine the effects of Facebook on a broader population, over time. She concludes that the effect of Facebook depends on what you bring to it. Just as your mother said: you get out only what you put in. If you use Facebook to communicate directly with other individuals. Personalized messages, or what Burke calls . So, you should inform your friend in writing how charming her son looks with Harry Potter cake smeared all over his face, and how interesting her sepia- toned photograph of that tree- framed bit of skyline is, and how cool it is that she. Even better than sending a private Facebook message is the semi- public conversation, the kind of back- and- forth in which you half ignore the other people who may be listening in. According to Burke, passive consumption of Facebook also correlates to a marginal increase in depression. Her conclusion suggests that my sometimes unhappy reactions to Facebook may be more universal than I had realized. When I scroll through page after page of my friends. A lot of other people doing the same thing feel a little bit worse, too. The people who experience loneliness on Facebook are lonely away from Facebook, too, she points out; on Facebook, as everywhere else, correlation is not causation. The popular kids are popular, and the lonely skulkers skulk alone. Perhaps it says something about me that I think Facebook is primarily a platform for lonely skulking. I mention to Burke the widely reported study, conducted by a Stanford graduate student, that showed how believing that others have strong social networks can lead to feelings of depression. What does Facebook communicate, if not the impression of social bounty? Everybody else looks so happy on Facebook, with so many friends, that our own social networks feel emptier than ever in comparison. In his landmark book, Loneliness, released in 2. Before long, these small wheels made way for much larger ones when the building was converted into a Bugatti garage in 1. Five years later, it became a depot belonging to the national war weapons factory located in Herstal. After the Second World War, the skating rink was used as a garage by Siemens before becoming an exhibition space for collectors’ cars in 1. The Patinoire royale is a building comprised of two wings; the first of which formally housed the roller skating rink and looks onto rue Veydt, whilst the second is smaller, of more recent construction, and is situated on rue Faider. The building is characterized by its neo- classical style. Its facade features columns adorned with ionic capitals that line the front of the building facing Veydt Street. Natural light floods into the building through semi- circular arched windows crowned with rosettes. Inside, a vast space unfolds under an impressive metallic Polonceau structure – named after the French engineer who submitted the patent in 1. Napoleon III. True to the era, the frame is made of wood and metal; its structure is held together by a metal tie. The rafters are also metallic; resting on consoles of the same style, they are lined with painted wooden frieze discs that mirror the ironwork. The Brussels Region declared the Patinoire royale a historical monument in 1. La patinoire (original title) 1h 17min . Want to share IMDb's rating on your own site?
